Is Steve Scanlan Australia’s “Best Mate”?

While many of us might consider flinging a spare footy ticket to a mate here or there… Super Steve has laid in on thick, and is bringing a total of 270 of his friends and family to the biggest boxing event we’ve ever hosted… the title showdown between Jeff Horn & Manny Pacquiao.

Shouting more people than many of us have as Facebook Friends… He’s got mates flying in from  Sydney, Perth, and all over Australia to watch this fight… all thanks to Steve.

But not only is he bringing close to 300 people to Suncorp Stadium to watch the match up… the super-fight might not even be happening if it wasn’t for him and his company, Recon Solutions.

Steve met welterweight contender Jeff Horn  three and a half years ago at the gym, when Jeff was still working fulltime as a teacher… boxing was a passion, something he excelled at, represented his country at… but also something that needed money to pursue on a grand scale.

While Steve play’s down his part helping Jeff, saying the man would have made it through his unbelievable talent, Steve says he was first impressed by Jeff’s drive and wanted to help him realise his dream.

“I met Jeff three and a half years ago, and thought he was such a great bloke, a great ambassador of good people.

“He was still working as a teacher then, and my company got behind him, gave him sponsorship… enabled him to go fulltime,” Steve said.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Victory after victory, knockout after knockout, Jeff Horn has been realising his dream. 16 professional wins, 1 draw, and 0 loses.

“He’s come along in leaps and bounds, done an amazing job. One of those guys that puts anything and everything into it… such a humble, down to earth guy,” he said.

“I just can’t wait for Australia to have a new hero, to have a new idol. Someone who doesn’t have an ego, doesn’t have an attitude.

“You can’t dream up a better story, overall he’s done wonders for me, he looks after me, and I will be walking into the ring with him.”

Jeff and Steve in Las Vegas at Floyd v Manny

And now, on July 2, almost two years exactly since Steve flew himself and Jeff to Las Vegas to watch the biggest fight in modern history (Floyd v Manny), Jeff will be facing off against Manny in front of his home crowd.

Steve, ecstatic for the success his friend has seen, wants to share his happiness with everyone. 270 of everyone, to be exact.

“I’m very lucky in life, I’ve been blessed in many different ways. And this is an easy way to give back to friends and family… I genuinely think Jeff is going to win, and it’s going to be an epic fight.

“The journey that I’ve been on through this, I’m trying to bring my friends on as well, bring everyone with me. How cool is it that I can give back to all these people that can’t afford or necessarily wouldn’t be able to?”

It’s an amazing story of friendship, perseverance, and never giving up.

And just how much is Steve pouring into this momentous occasion? Upwards of $100,000, especially when you take into account the extravagant after-party he has planned for his guests and of course Jeff Horn.

The CEO of Recon Solutions, or Australia’s best mate?

We will let you decide, but we reckon he’s both.
