Matt Graham has become Australia’s first medallist at the Pyeongchang Winter Games, after a blistering performance in the men’s mogul ski finals.

Graham, 23, is ranked number three in the world and scored 82.57 in the final round on the Bokwang Snow Park course to claim the silver medal.

For the 24.85 second run, Graham scored 15.23 time points, 16.44 for air height and 50.9 for his turns to give him his final score.

After his win, Graham said it had been a “long journey” to get to this point, and that it was “still sinking in” that he was an Olympic medallist.

“Obviously we’re going to celebrate, it’s been a big campaign, the last four years have been huge and I’ll kick back for a little bit and just relax,” he said.

“It means the world, to have such strong supporters over here in Korea, it’s freezing cold over here, and they’re all out there cheering me on.”

The Australian held his nerve throughout the day, making it to the final six, against fierce competition, including the undisputed world number one, Mikael Kingsbury.

It was Kingsbury who pipped him at the post, beating Graham by 4.06 points, while Japan’s Daichi Hara took out the bronze with a score of 82.19.
