American pop ‘goddess’ and LGBTQI icon Cher has been confirmed as the headline act for Sydney’s gay and lesbian Mardi Gras.

This year’s festivities are set to be held on 3 March and will mark the 40th anniversary of the famed event.

The pop queen has had a number one record in each of the last five decades and has sold more than a million records worldwide, making her one of the biggest stars in show business to headline the annual event.

Mardi Gras CEO Terese Casu says Cher has established herself as a strong icon for the gay community, making her a perfect fit for the party.

“Cher has established herself as an influential, hard-hitting voice in global politics, and throughout her career has been at the forefront of LGBTQI campaigns and numerous charities,” Ms Casu said.

“Cher represents the same unapologetic and fearless freedom that makes the LGBTQI community so enduring and strong—positioning herself as a true gay icon.”

Legendary acts joining Cher this year include DJ Alex Taylor, Annabelle Gasper, Sveta, Ben Drayton, DJ Dan Murphy, DJ Dan Slater, DJ Du Jour, DJ Gemma, Kate Doherty, DJ Kate Monroe, DJ Kitty Glitter, Sezzo Snot, DJ Smithers, Stephen Allkins, and Yo! Mafia.

NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said, “This year’s Mardi Gras will be a momentous occasion for LGBTQI Australians and I have no doubt it will be the biggest and best yet.”

“From commemorating 40 years since the first Mardi Gras took place through the streets of Darlinghurst and Kings Cross to reaching marriage equality, there will be a lot to celebrate. Cher fits this celebratory mood perfectly.”

The first release of tickets to the show have already sold out, however a strictly limited number of newly released tickets will go on sale next week, due to an increase in capacity by adding the Dome venue.

“A strictly limited number of newly released tickets to The Party will go on sale Monday 15 January at 10am AEDT for existing Mardi Gras members only. The final release tickets for the general public are on sale 10am AEDT Wednesday 17 January,” a statement from Mardi Gras said.

Tickets will be available through Ticketek.
