The bodies of two men have been found inside a molasses tank in North Queensland, after a tragic work accident occurred late Saturday night.

Queensland police and emergency services were called to Sarina Beach, about 37 kilometres south of Mackay, around 8.30pm - after water was seen coming from the tank. On arrival police found both men dead.

The men aged 52-years-old and 48-years old were reportedly cleaning a molasses tank at a transport company, when they were overcome by fumes, while inside one of two water tanks.

A spokesman for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said the two tanks were attached to a prime mover and the victims worked for a commercial transport company.

An investigation lead by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is currently underway as they try to determine the cause of the incident.
