Ed Sheeran delights fans in ‘secret’ Melbourne performance

Pop superstar Ed Sheeran has delighted fans in a surprise pop-up performance in Melbourne’s famed Hosier Lane, as he was honoured at the iHeartRadio Awards.

He performed his hit song ‘Perfect’, from his 2017 Divide album, which was streamed back live to the award ceremony taking place at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

One thousand lucky fans, who had won tickets to the see the English singer, were notified via e-mail about the “secret” concert only hours before it was due to begin.

“As this is a secret performance there are a few boring rules,” the message read.

“Ed’s security team don’t muck around.”

Rules stated that audience members were not allowed to use their phones or to film the performance.

But chaos ensured as thousands turned up to get a glimpse of the star, and many were forced to listen the performance from nearby laneways and streets.

One girl who was lucky enough to be in the crowd said it was “like a dream” that he was performing there.

“I just think that he’s a genuine kind of person, he seems like he’s real, like he’s a natural kind of guy,” she said.

Another fan, Dylan Amsellem, told Ten Eyewitness News he had travelled all the way from France to see Sheeran tour Australia.

“It was really great. It was a really great mood in this really famous street,” he said.

“You were not allowed to film or take pictures. It was more authentic, just seeing with your eyes and dancing, it was cool.”

Sheeran took out the Song of the Year Category at the iHeartRadio Awards for his smash hit ‘Shape of You.’

He is performing at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium over the next two nights, before he makes his way to Sydney on is record-breaking tour.
