Move over Scott and Charlene, Aussie TV’s getting its first legal same-sex wedding

In some of the most exciting news since Fake Dee fleeced the Rebecchis, actor, comedian, writer and same-sex marriage advocate Magda Szubanski will be joining the cast of Neighbours in a guest role as the celebrant for the first legal same-sex wedding on Australian television.

Playing Jemima Davies-Smythe, Magda will marry David and Aaron in an emotionally charged episode which will air in September, 2018.

Speaking with ten daily, Szubanski said the role was one of the “best offers I've had for a long time.”

"I thought it was both hilarious and historic, so when they asked me I just jumped at it. I think it's gold."

Neighbours Executive Producer, Jason Herbison said he’d always dreamed of having Szubanski on the show. “Aside from being a brilliant actress, she inspired many of us during the same sex marriage debate," he said of the campaign’s most public face. “At the same time our story team were planning our first gay wedding, the country was trapped in a divisive plebiscite. Would our story about love and equality even be legal by the time it aired? Thankfully love won. Magda was a beacon of heart and hope during this time so we had to find a way to make her part of it.”

Highlighting the importance of having an event like this on a show like Neighbours, Szubanski told ten daily that “popular culture shows like this can change consciousnesses".

"They can change people's attitudes so this reflects some of the change’s already happened and will hopefully normalise further that we're people just like everybody else."

Fans of the show are likely to relish the arrival of Jemima Davies-Smythe who will not only marry Aaron and David in a ceremony Szubanski teased would have a more wow factor than Harry and Meghan’s, but when it’s revealed the character is connected to Ramsay Street Royalty.

Szubanski reportedly enjoyed her time filming the show, even though the weather was cold. Which is funny, because it’s always summer in Erinsborough.
