Jealous teen attacks love rival with sulphuric acid

A teenage girl has been jailed following a sickening acid attack on another teen in her school orchestra.

It is understood the pair shared a heated rivalry which turned sour when the victim started dating the perpetrators ex-boyfriend.

Emily Bowen, 18, is accused of pouring drain cleaner into fellow pupil Molly Young’s viola case in a horrifying attack which left her victim scarred for life.

According to reports, Bowen also wrote a fake letter demanding she commit suicide, pretending the note came from Young. Authorities believe this letter was written six weeks after the attack.

It is understood Young sustained burns to her legs after she picked up the instrument from a shelf and the liquid – almost pure sulphuric acid - splashed over her.

She was left screaming in pain in the music room at Knox Academy in Haddington, Scotland.

The “utterly wicket” incident took place in September last year.

Bowen was jailed for 21 months after facing the Edinburgh Sheriff Court, which said the attacker had searched for information about acid attacks online after discovering Young was dating her ex-boyfriend.

Sheriff Michael O’Grady QC described her crime as “utterly wicked”.

“You researched this topic and should have been aware of the potentially horrendous consequences for any young woman maimed by this,” he said.

“You have left a young woman to suffer a terrifying ordeal and she will be both physically and mentally scarred for the rest of her life.”

Young’s attacker is the daughter of barrister Andrew Bowen QC and had intended to attend Aberdeen University to study law, according to reports.

Additionally, the court heard Young required plastic surgery following the attack and is suffering shooting pain and nerve damage.

Bowen, who has reportedly been diagnosed with autism and depression, has been banned from contacting Young for five years.
